Welcome to Hostel Adventures!

For nearly a century, the international hostel movement has gathered people of the world together in an atmosphere of friendship and respect, expanding their worlds through educational travel. Hostels around the globe promote interaction among travelers, provide a sense of place, increase awareness of the natural world, and encourage cross-cultural understanding and international friendship.

Hostel Adventures are interactive, experiential education programs for youth and adults that encourage the exploration of our natural environment, our local communities, and other cultures around the world.

From environmental education to cultural programs, travel workshops to mural art projects, Hostel Adventures are ultimately designed to promote environmental stewardship, intercultural exchange, and responsible travel.

There are four types of Hostel Adventure programs:

  • Outdoor Hostel Adventures
Day and overnight environmental education programs in coastal State and National Parks, for school and youth groups in grades K-12.
  • Cultural Kitchen
Intercultural education programs hosted at eight Northern California Hostels, for school and youth groups in grades 5-12.
  • Community Walls
Community education and mural project hosted at nine Northern California Hostels, for school and youth groups in grades 2-12.
  • Travel Education
Free, two-hour travel workshops for youth and adults, available for groups and individuals at Northern California hostels and additional locations in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Hostel Adventures are presented by the Golden Gate Council of Hostelling International USA, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization based in San Francisco. In addition to its educational programs, the Council operates nine hostels throughout Northern California.
