Golden Anniversary of Golden Gate Hostels: A three-month series of free hostel events!

Golden Gate Council 50 years logo

San Francisco was a busy place in 1958. The Giants had just moved from the "Big Apple" to the "City by the Bay," Alfred Hitchcock’s film noir Vertigo had audiences looking at Mission Dolores in a new light, and hostelling came to San Francisco with the founding of the Golden Gate Council of American Youth Hostels.

We’re celebrating our 50th anniversary in style, with an autumn full of free parties and other happenings at seven of our locations around Northern California. Each event is as unique as the hostel hosting it, from a BBQ under a 115-foot lighthouse to an art exhibit in a Gold Rush-era mansion.

More information will be available as each event approaches, so mark your calendars and be sure you’re subscribed to our newsletter, Hostel Tripper, for updates about this landmark series of festivities.

We’ve come a long way since 1958, when Kathleen and Walt McAdam, along with other eager volunteers, founded the Golden Gate Council to bring hostel-friendly folks together for outdoor adventures in the Bay Area. Since then, the Council has grown into the largest network of hostels in the country, spanning the northern Golden State from San Mateo’s lighthouse bluffs to the redwood forests of the Lost Coast. You can read about the history of HI-USA Golden Gate Council here, or check out a brief timeline of Council milestones here.

Come party with us as we kick up our heels and celebrate five decades of welcoming the world to Northern California!
