50th Anniversary Celebration: Labyrinth Building at the Redwood Hostel

Head to the Lost Coast for a rejuvenating escape and the perfect cure for that Halloween hangover — an oceanside labyrinth building at Wilson Creek Beach in Redwood National and State Parks.

Join the hostel staff and your fellow travelers in building a Seven Circuit Classical Labyrinth, 50 feet in diameter, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Golden Gate Council of Hostelling International. Explore a majestic cove while collecting driftwood, rocks, and other found materials to outline the labyrinth.

Each participant will walk the labyrinth, beginning on the outside and following the path that leads to the center. Representing equilibrium and balance, labyrinths have existed in many cultures and are non-dogmatic. Walking the circuitous, "labyrinthine" path is thought to bring one back into a centered state, a form of contemplative meditation.

"The Golden Gate Council and the labyrinth share something in common," says Redwood Hostel General Manager Kaci Elder. "Both create a space open to people from all walks of life and all cultures. Our hostels are like this labyrinth in that there is no single person who owns our hostels, just as no one can own a labyrinth. Both are created by the community, for the community."

No special skills or supplies are necessary for this activity, just bring a desire to get your hands sandy and build something with your fellow travelers. Light snacks and drinks are provided.
