You’re Invited: Community Walls art reception (April 29)
Posted by Sarah on Mar 19, 2010

After eight weeks of learning about their community, imagining the change they hope to see there, and expressing those hopes in paint, ten kids from Hunter’s Point will present their Community Walls murals at the San Francisco Fisherman’s Wharf Hostel on April 29.
For this project, educators from Hostelling International’s Community Walls program partnered with City of Dreams, which works with youth in San Francisco’s public housing communities to inspire positive cultural change and end the generational poverty cycle. Community Walls seeks to bring cultural understanding to youth in grades 2-12, along with a vision of community and a voice within it.
As part of an after-school program, a group of kids from the Hunter’s Point neighborhood took part in the joint project, learning about the history of their community and the issues that effect it, including pollution, gang violence, public housing, and drug abuse. Using the quote "imagine the future, remember the past" as a keystone, they’ve painted two 3′ x 4′ canvases to show the change they want to see there.
The public art reception will be held at the Fisherman’s Wharf Hostel on April 29 from 7 to 8 p.m. Snacks, drinks, and cake will be served. The paintings will be on display at the hostel for a month before being donated back to City of Dreams.
Please note: The date for this event was originally announced as April 22. We apologize for any confusion.
