100th Anniversary Party at the Marin Headlands Hostel (August 28)
Posted by admin on Jul 30, 2009

Join us at the Marin Headlands Hostel on Friday, August 28, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the hostelling movement and the 75th anniversary of Hostelling International USA with an afternoon of festivities held amid the tranquil meadows and eucalyptus groves of the Headlands.
The day is chock-full of activities, including a hostel "quest" scavenger hunt, guided hikes, live music, a kids’ art project, prize giveaways, refreshments, and more.
Young ones can explore their artistic side with a Community Walls art project, where they work with other children to create a mural. Kids and adults alike will enjoy the self-guided hostel quest scavenger hunt, taking visitors on a walk through the historic hostel. Be sure to bring your finished quest sheet to the hostel’s front desk to be entered in the day’s prize giveaway.
Guests can also get a closer look at the hostel and its home in Fort Barry with a historic walk, held from 5:15-6:00 p.m. Learn about the history and architecture of this former army base, which is also celebrating its centennial this year.
Live music will begin at 6:00 p.m., courtesy of Magic Leaves, The Tao Riders, and The Non-Prophets. Bay Area group Magic Leaves performs soft, eccentric folk music with swirling guitars and soulful vocals, featuring Joshua Bruner (singer/songwriter), Matt Adams (bass and vocals), Will Halsey (drums), Indianna Hale (percussion and vocals), and Kacey Johansing (keys and vocals). The Tao Riders — with Steve Leonard (vocals and guitar), Andy Heusser (guitar and backup vocals), and Jono Piva (bass and backup vocals) – perform original songs with acoustic vibes. The Non-Prophets — comprised of two brothers from Mill Valley — perform "improvised jazz experiments" on piano and guitar.
Finish off the day with a ranger-led night hike through the Headlands, starting at 7:00 p.m.
In addition to the prize giveaways at the event, partygoers can also enter to win an Anniversary Week Grand Prize Package, which includes:
- A three-night private room stay for two people at any HI-USA Golden Gate Council hostel
- A Flip Ultra video camera
- Two one-year Hostelling International memberships
- Two 27-ounce stainless steel Klean Kanteens
- Two 100% organic cotton zippered hoodies with original artwork by Michael Wertz
