Virgin America and Southwest airlines announce new routes to/from San Francisco

Low-cost airlines Virgin America and Southwest have both announced new routes from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) beginning this spring.

Starting on February 12, 2008, Virgin America will offer new service from San Francisco to San Diego, with fares starting as low as $39 each way. The service will begin with three flights a day, and will ramp up to five daily flights starting in March. This SoCal locale marks the fifth route from San Francisco for the relatively new Virgin America airline–the other four destinations are New York (JFK), Los Angeles (LAX), Washington DC (Dulles), and Las Vegas (LAS).

Southwest Airlines is also beefing up its service in 2008, with new nonstop flights beginning on March 8 between San Francisco and Phoenix, Arizona, starting at $99 one-way. Also starting on March 8 is expanded service between San Francisco and Los Angeles, with 12 round-trip flights per day between the two California cities.
