San Francisco International Airport launches Green Rental Car program

The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has launched the nation’s first Green Rental Car program, which rewards customers for renting alternative-fuel vehicles, and rental car companies for offering more high-mileage and alternative-fuel vehicles. The innovative incentive program is expected to eliminate more than 4,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
Customers who rent hybrid cars that achieve an EPA rating of 18 or higher will receive a $15 discount at the counter. Cars in this category include the Honda Civic Hybrid, Nissan Altima Hybrid, or Toyota Prius.
Likewise, airport rental car companies will qualify for 20 percent off their airport rental fees if at least 15 percent of their rentals are for high-mileage or hybrid cars — those with an EPA rating of 17 or higher. Cars in this category include the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Ford Focus, as well as hybrid cars.
The Green Rental Car program is part of SFO’s overall commitment to clean-air vehicles, which includes encouraging the use of buses, vans, and taxis powered by compressed natural gas; using electric-powered vehicles and equipment on the airfield; and replacing the old diesel-powered shuttle system with a hydroelectric-powered AirTrain, which links the airport’s terminals, parking lots, and car rental facilities.
