Point Montara Lighthouse Hostel staff join Climate Action campaign
May 18, 2007

Staff at the Point Montara Lighthouse Hostel were amongst dozens who gathered for a Step It Up action event on Montara State Beach on April 14. During this National Day of Climate Action, citizens concerned about the catastrophic effects of global warming rallied together at more than 1,000 events across the country, to urge Congress to cut carbon emissions 80 percent by 2050. The events were part of the Step It Up campaign, the largest day of citizen action focusing on global warming in our nation’s history.
Events were held in every corner of the country, from Maine to Hawaii, Seattle to Key West. Rallies were organized by groups and individuals from all walks of life who agree on one thing: The time has come for our elected officials to take bold and immediate steps to combat global warming.
Participants in every event were photographed displaying their message: Step It Up Congress! Cut Carbon 80 percent by 2050! At Montara State Beach, participants lay in the sand to spell out "Step It Up!" and posed for aerial photographs. Photos from all the events were sent to Washington, DC, so members of Congress could see for themselves that their constituents are demanding bold action.
"The groundswell of support for this effort is incredible. This is truly a viral grassroots movement, organized mainly through word of mouth, email outreach among friends, and the online community," said Step it Up organizer, Bill McKibben. "The enormous participation in today’s movement is a wake-up call to legislators from across the country. Their constituents are urgently demanding that America get on the path towards reducing carbon emissions before it is too late."
