See youth art at a Community Walls reception in San Francisco (December 8)

Join us at the San Francisco Fisherman’s Wharf Hostel for a free art exhibit and reception, as San Francisco youth unveil four new murals depicting culture in their unique neighborhoods.
Enjoy light refreshments as you take in the paintings, created through HI-USA Golden Gate Council’s Community Walls mural project, by members of the Columbia Park and Ernest Ingold branches of the Boys and Girls Club of San Francisco (BGCSF).
These murals represent nine weeks worth of planning, collaboration, and mentorship, culminating in the painting of two 4′x6′ canvases per BGCSF branch. More than just teaching the kids artistic techniques, Community Walls encourages the youth to take a deeper look at their own communities and their place within it.
The student artists went on guided outings to explore and sketch their neighborhoods, and heard from guest speaker Jet Martinez, a local muralist with the Clarion Alley Mural Project. They were also treated to a tour of the Fisherman’s Wharf Hostel, which provided an introductory glimpse into hostelling and acquainted them with the site of their reception.
The murals will remain on display in the hostel for guests to enjoy until January 1, 2010, when they will be donated to the BGCSF clubhouses.
