A white Christmas is certainly nice, but how about a winter holiday that includes the mountains, deserts, and shores of sunny San Diego? For 56 years, Hostelling International's Christmas Bike Trip has attracted bike riders young and old, novice and veteran, for a six-day, 400-mile trek through southern California.
The route passes through Pine Valley, Palm Desert, and the stunning San Diego coast. In addition to being a great ride, the trip also fosters a community and has a long history of returning riders. Meet new friends, experience beautiful Southern California, and enjoy a holiday ride away from the hustle and bustle of big cities!
The route swings through Pine Valley, a small mountain village, and then down to Warner Springs, with stops in Julian for their famous apple pie. The third day is a centennial ride, the only 100-mile ride on the six-day trip. Bike from Warmer Springs to Palm Desert and experience the amazing desert views along the way. On the fourth day, continue to Hemet and then Fallbrook on a country road shaded with oak trees. On the sixth day the route loops back to San Diego and follows the coastline; riders can soak up the sea air and enjoy stunning views of the Pacific.
The ride takes place December 26-31. Early registration is now available; the cost is $400 (before November 15), $450 (before December 24), and $550 (day of registration). The registration fee includes accommodations, breakfasts, dinners, sag wagon support, and the Christmas Trip t-shirt. Riders are expected to provide their own lunches and spare bike parts. Discounted hostel stays are also available for out-of-town riders.
