Hostel Features

Quote from Rough GuideAt the Redwood National Park Hostel, guests wake up to ocean views and spend the day exploring the park's namesake -- Coast Redwoods, taller than any other living thing on the planet. The hostel is just steps from the Pacific Ocean, and offers direct access to both the Coastal Trail and the beach.

The oldest redwood trees in the surrounding park predate Christ and tower 300 feet high. They truly live up to their scientific name, Sequoia Sempervirens, which means "The Everliving Tree." They are why the Redwood National Park Hostel exists -- to share these old giants with travelers from around the world.

Redwood National Park Hostel dining roomKitchen and dining

The hostel has a spacious, ocean-view kitchen and dining room for guests to prepare and enjoy their meals. The kitchen is fully equipped with two stoves and ovens, microwave, toaster, dehydrator, blender, pots and pans, dishes, utensils, and ample refrigerator/freezer space. Complimentary (mostly organic) coffee and tea, pancake mix, cooking oils and spices, and tasty drinking water (straight from the well) are also provided.

In short, the kitchen has everything but groceries -- stock up on supplies on your way to the hostel. If coming from points south, try Wildberries in Arcata, or the Arcata and Eureka co-ops. From the north, stop by Harvest Natural Foods in Crescent City, Brookings Natural Foods Co-op in Brookings, or Farmers' Market in Grants Pass.

Snack-quoia Sempervirens

Did you know that you can buy snacks, chocolates, drinks, pasta, soup (and more) at the Redwood Hostel? In honor of the redwood tree's Latin name, Sequoia sempervirens, which is roughly translated to "the everliving tree," the hostel's little store has been christened Snack-quoia sempervirens, or "the everliving snack."

The selection varies, and the price is always right. Your choices might include Amy's organic soups, organic marinara sauce and organic pasta, Annie's Shells & White Cheddar, Nature Valley Granola Bars, ClifBars, canned mixed fruit, and beverages such as Santa Cruz Organic Soda, apple or orange juice, and soy milk.

Or you could sample the Redwood Hostel's line of gourmet chocolate bars and chocolate bark, made locally by Sandy and Michael Nakashima of Drakes Glen Creations. The Red Eye Toffee features coffee toffee, kona coffee, and dark chocolate... the Redwood Hostel bar comes with sweet cranberries and almonds... Lemon Bark is made from a tantalizing blend of candy lemon bits and white chocolate... and the Rocky Road Clusters taste as good as they sound.
