Take a free Salmon Spawning Tour in Redwood National Park

The fish are here, the water conditions are great, and it won’t last long! Save the Redwoods League, Redwood National and State Parks, and the North Coast Redwood Interpretive Association are offering free, guided trips to view the annual migration and spectacle of spawning salmon, on Saturdays and Sundays through the end of January.

Discover the amazing life history of this "Totem of the Pacific Northwest," who travels from freshwater to salt water and back again, to the waters of their birth. Experience how this "Silver Thread" weaves our world together. Two separate trips are being offered, one to the Mill Creek Watershed in Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, and the other to Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park.

During the Mill Creek Watershed tour, participants carpool in their personal vehicles on gravel roads to select viewing locations. Visitors view salmon spawning in the Mill Creek Watershed, a tributary of the Smith River, which is regarded as one of California’s most ecologically significant areas and a top productive stream for Coho salmon.

During the Prairie Creek tour, participants drive to various locations, park, and then hike among old-growth redwoods to prime viewing spots. Morning trips for both tours run from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., and afternoon tours are from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.

For both areas, walking short distances over uneven ground may be required. Wet weather gear and sturdy hiking shoes are recommended, and polarized glasses are suggested for best viewing of the salmon. Tours will happen rain or shine, whenever water and fish conditions allow. Space is limited on these free tours, and pre-registration is required. To reserve your spot, call (707) 465-6191.
