100th Anniversary Party at the Redwood National Park Hostel (August 23)

100 years of hostelling

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the hostelling movement and the 75th anniversary of Hostelling International USA, the Redwood National Park Hostel is throwing open its doors on Sunday, August 23, for an afternoon party and open house featuring travel-themed games, hostel tours, refreshments, prize giveaways, and more.

Sip on organic coffee and tea, homemade lavender lemonade, and mimosas while snacking on pastries and homemade berry and cream cheese crepes (thanks to our donors Alexandre Dairy, Continental Bakery, Costco, and Harvest Natural Foods).

Try your hand (and imagination) in a game of Traveler’s Mad Libs, where groups of two or more fill in the blanks of a story to create a unique (and sometimes nonsensical) traveler’s tale. Completed stories will be entered in a drawing at the end of the day, and three winners will be randomly selected to receive prizes (winners must be present to claim prize).

Partygoers can also contribute their personal stories to Hostelling International’s anniversary archive in the Storyteller Center. A Flip video camera will be on hand for guests to record their travel and hostelling stories, and short clips will be posted to YouTube (with the subject’s written approval, of course). For the more camera-shy, handouts will be provided for travelers to record their stories in writing.

Visitors can take part in one of the ongoing hostel tours, and learn about the history of this pioneer homestead turned hostel. Also, stop in the hostel’s common room to check out the new short documentary, What is a Hostel? which will be playing on loop throughout the party.

In addition to the prize giveaways at the event, partygoers can also enter to win an Anniversary Week Grand Prize Package, which includes:
