"Cruising with Kayak Zak" Package

Cruise California’s "Lost Coast" this summer on a kayaking adventure! The Redwood Hostel and Kayak Zak’s are offering a discount package that includes two nights of accommodation and a two-hour guided sea-kayaking trip, for just $105 per person.

Reserve your "Cruising with Kayak Zak" package and set off with a professional guide on a birding and whale-watching tour of Trinidad Cove in Humboldt County. Using single and tandem sit-on-top kayaks, you’ll get close to nature in a way that landlubbers can’t, with close-up views of shorebirds, marine mammals, and ancient rock formations from the water.

This trip is appropriate for beginners as well as more experienced kayakers, and includes all equipment as well as a brief kayaking lesson before launch. In addition, Kayak Zak’s offers an "adaptive kayak" program, which means they are trained and able to adapt kayaks, paddles, gear, and techniques for persons with disabilities, sports injuries, preexisting conditions, and joint pain.

This package includes:

  • Two nights accommodation at the Redwood Hostel, in a shared room (private rooms available at additional cost).
  • A two-hour sea-kayaking trip with a professional guide, including mini-lesson and single or tandem kayak, wetsuit, helmet, life jacket, windbreaker, and booties.
  • Complimentary bottled water from Native Springs, a 100% Native American owned and operated company supporting Klamath River restoration.

This package is available May 27 - August 28, 2008. Please note that Trinidad Cove is located 60 miles south of the hostel, and transportation is not included in package.

To reserve, call the Redwood Hostel at (707) 482-8265. Reservations must be made in advance, and are subject to availability.

Summer Kayak Rental Discount

Redwood Hostel guests can request $5 discount coupons for kayak rentals at Big Lagoon County Park near Orick, California. That means three hours of kayaking fun with mini-lesson included, for just $25 for a single kayak or $35 for a double.

Sharing a 3.5-mile sand spit with the Pacific Ocean, Big Lagoon is Humboldt County’s warmest body of water. Spend an afternoon paddling the 9-mile perimeter of the enclosed lagoon, alongside shore birds and river otters frolicking in the calm waters. You can also paddle up Maple Creek, where you’ll often spy Roosevelt Elk from your kayak.

Coupons are available to all hostel guests at the front desk, and are valid May 27 - August 28, subject to rental availability. Rentals are provided by Kayak Zak's. Please note that Big Lagoon County Park is located 45 miles south of the hostel, and unfortunately is not accessible by public transit.

Hiker/Biker Discount

Hikers and cyclists arriving at the hostel without motorized transportation receive a discount of $5 per night.
