Point Reyes shuttle bus service starts Dec. 26

Northern elephant seals

On December 26, the Point Reyes National Seashore begins its annual shuttle bus service for visitors heading to see the migrating gray whales and breeding elephant seal colony.

Rather than try to fight for the limited parking available at prime viewing areas, visitors can leave their cars at Drakes Beach and enjoy a quick, traffic-free ride to their wildlife-watching destinations. These shuttles also reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and are an important tool to protect the fragile headlands while allowing access for visitors.

The service is offered on weekends and holidays, from 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., through mid-April 2010. The buses run on demand throughout the day (about 20 minutes apart), with the last bus leaving Drakes Beach at 3:30 p.m. Shuttles make stops at the historic lighthouse parking lot (for whale watchers) and at Chimney Rock (for seal watchers).

Ticket sales open at 9 a.m. at the Ken Patrick Visitor Center at Drakes Beach and close at 3 p.m. Tickets are $5, free for children 16 and under. Federal Senior and Access pass discounts apply.

Drivers should note that when the buses are operating, Sir Francis Drake Boulevard is closed to all other traffic, starting at the South Beach junction, from 9:00 a.m. - 5:15 p.m.
