100th Anniversary Party and Ice Cream Social at the Sacramento Hostel (August 25)

Looking for a cool treat to help you beat the legendary Gold Country heat? Then head to the Sacramento Hostel on Tuesday, August 25, for an old-fashioned ice cream social, and help us celebrate the 100th anniversary of the hostelling movement and the 75th anniversary of Hostelling International USA.
Enjoy live jazz music, a tour of the historic hostel, prize giveaways, and — of course — ice cream.
Step inside the air conditioned mansion, located in the heart of downtown Sacramento, and grab a free ice cream cone from Leatherby’s Family Creamery.
While you enjoy your ice cream, groove to the sounds of the Alegria Quartet, a Sacramento-based group that takes its name from the Spanish word for "happiness." For these musicians, happiness results from performing their free-form, improvised music, which pulls from jazz, funk, and reggae styles. The group consists of saxophonist Tanya Mendoza, guitarist Loren Pritchard, bassist Jay Souza, and drummer Tyler Lammerding.
At 6:00 p.m., the band takes a break to allow for a special dedication ceremony honoring former Sacramento mayor Heather Fargo and Barbara Wein, executive director of HI-USA Golden Gate Council from 1984-2008. A commemorative plaque will be unveiled in recognition of the work these two women did to establish the Sacramento Hostel in 1995.
The evening is rounded out by a tour of the hostel — a beautifully restored 19th century mansion — led by general manager Steve Haynes at 7:00 p.m. Known to historians as the Llewellyn Williams Mansion, the building’s Italianate-Stick Style boasts beautiful Victorian touches, such as stained glass skylights, elegantly carved stairways, hand-painted tile fireplaces, and gleaming chandeliers.
In addition to the prize giveaways at the event, partygoers can also enter to win an Anniversary Week Grand Prize Package, which includes:
